A tiny peninsula jutting out into the Persian Gulf from the eastern side of Saudi Arabia, Qatar is a sovereign Arab country located in the Middle East. Qatar is an absolute monarchy and has been ruled by the Al Thani family since the mid-19th century. Islam is the predominant religion in Qatar, with almost 90% of the population being Sunni Muslims and around 5-15% being Shia Muslims. While Arabic is the official and main language spoken in Qatar, English is also widely spoken. Qatar has an arid, subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild, pleasant winters. Besides being a shopper’s paradise with its extravagant malls and shopping centres, Qatar also boasts of picturesque beaches, iconic museums, traditional souks, charming sand dunes and spectacular towers and buildings. Qatar restaurants are some of the best in the world, making the country one of the finest holiday destinations in the Gulf.
